Abnormal Uterine Bleeding/Heavy Periods

Abnormal Uterine Bleeding/Heavy Periods

The Woods Women's Group understands how difficult it can be to deal with heavy bleeding during menstruation. Over 20% of women suffer from abnormal periods. For some women heavy periods begin with their very first menstrual flow. While others may begin to have abnormal periods later in life.

Menorrhagia is menstrual bleeding that lasts more than 7 days or is heavy in volume requiring constant attention. It can also be bleeding that is very heavy. Women who have menorrhagia may have to:

  • Change your tampon/pad at least once an hours for a day or more
  • You pass clots the size of a quarter or larger
  • Change pads in the middle of the night
  • Wear two pads at a time to manage heavy flow.

Some women may experience bleeding between periods, or have bleeding earlier or later than their expected cycles. Bleeding as such is referred to as abnormal uterine bleeding or irregular menstrual bleeding.

Episodes of heavy bleeding, blood flow and/or painful cramping make for one's usual activities more difficult. Excessive periods could lead to anemia (low levels of red blood cells), resulting in one feeling weak, tired, or out of breath. If you talk with your doctor there are many treatments that can help.

If your menses are inhibiting you daily activities, you are encouraged to speak to your health care provider for further evaluation and treatment.
